Student Organizations

If you are interested in this Industry and are not yet a member of a student organization, give it serious thought. They are great places to learn about opportunities, network with people like you asking the same types of questions, and meet Industry professionals.

We have listed some information about the major national student organizations below - and provided links to their websites.

Your teachers, guidance counselors, or career counselors can tell you about organizations at your school or college. You don't have to be sure that this is the Industry in which you want to work. They are here to help you with making your decision or, for those who have already decided, steer you in the right direction.
National Student Organizations

The largest student organizations are the national ones - and many operate within both high schools and colleges, providing information, training and competition opportunities, scholarships, resources, and meetings and conferences on various topics. They are usually very well connected with colleges. Some of the major national student organizations include:

Academy of Hospitality & Tourism (AOHT):
Members: High school students interested in post-secondary education and careers in the hospitality and tourism industries
Mission: Academic learning experiences are combined with hands-on work experience to help students develop the thinking and problem-solving skills critical to post-secondary education and career success.

Business Professionals of America BPA):
Members:Students in business and technology career educational programs within the US
Mission: Contribute to the preparation of a world-class workforce through the advancement of leadership, citizenship, academic, and technological skills.

Careers Through Culinary Arts Program (C-CAP):
Members: Students preparing for careers in the restaurant and hospitality fields
Mission: Promote and provide career opportunities in the foodservice industry for disadvantaged youth through culinary arts education and employment.

Delta Epsilon Chi (DECA):
Probably the largest and most active high school student organization within the Hospitality Industry.
Members: High school students studying marketing, management, and entrepreneurship in business, finance, hospitality, and marketing sales and service - worldwide.
Mission: Develop future leaders in marketing, management and entrepreneurship.

Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA):
Members: Career and technical students in family and consumer sciences education, attending public and private schools through grade 12.
Mission: Promote personal growth and leadership development through family and consumer sciences education, focusing on the multiple roles of family member, wage earner and community leader. Learn more at www.fcclainc.org.

Future Business Leaders of America - Phi Beta Lambda (FBLA):
Members: Students preparing for careers in business and business-related fields.
Mission: Bring business and education together in a positive working relationship through innovative leadership and career development programs

Lodging Management Program (LMP)
Members: 11th and 12th grade high school students combine classroom learning and real-life work experiences in the lodging industry.
Mission: Teach management principles that will enable the students to achive success in a hospitality leadership role and open doors in the lodging industry.

National Society of Minorities in Hospitality (NSMH)
Members: Minority students within the hospitality field
Mission: Aid in the recruitment, retention, support and advancement of minority students in the hospitality industry by building and maintaining relationships between industry professionals and students in ways that encourage lifelong commitment to the organization

ProStart:
Members: High school students combine classroom learning and work experience in a career-building program.
Mission: Produce the future leaders in the restaurant and foodservice industry.

SkillsUSA:
Members: Students enrolled in programs with vocational trade, industrial, technical and health occupations objectives
Mission: Create a partnership of students, teachers and Industry to help each student excel and ensure America has a skilled work force.
