In many ways, restaurants are a cornerstone of the U.S. economy. With more than 925,000 units generating sales of over $500 billion, restaurants are the nation's largest single private-sector employers. Restaurants employ more than 12.5 million people. It is a popular segment of the Hospitality industry - more than two out of five (42 percent) of American adults have worked in a restaurant at some point in their lives. It's also socially conscientious, with nine out of ten restaurants making donations to their communities.

The dream of business ownership and being one's own boss is alive and well in this segment. Most restaurateurs started in entry-level jobs. "Dishwasher" was the first restaurant job among 16 percent of restaurateurs; "busperson" among 10 percent; "cook" among 10 percent; and "server" among 9 percent.

Experience in the restaurant segment - whether for a year or a career - means a lot. This segment is an important employer of new workers. Once in the industry, a wealth of training is available.
