What exactly is the Hospitality industry?
Add up every single dollar spent at every single Wal-Mart (there are more than 3,000 of them) on every single day for an entire year, and you get a very big number...
Then you multiply it by three.
That's the size of the Hospitality industry!
And for every single job at Wal-Mart, there are six in the Hospitality industry.
So what do these 14 million people do? And on what do people spend over $600 billion (yes, that's with a "B") every year?
Well... it is every hotel, motel, restaurant, fast-food outlet, sports event, travel agent, airline ticket, amusement park, cruise ship, movie theatre, casino, and club in the world... and then some. It is where people go to be entertained, conduct business, and spend their vacations and their leisure time. It also includes the people who manufacture the foods you find at the grocery stores (cereals, packaged meals, soft drinks, snacks), every cafeteria you have ever seen (at schools, hospitals, universities, office buildings), and the companies that deliver all these products to warehouses, individual stores, and even to your door.
The pizza delivery guy and the person responsible for setting up the next Superbowl... both are part of the Hospitality industry family. That's the lure of this industry - there are hundreds of ways to move forward in your career. And there are hundreds of types of jobs - buy land, build hotels and casinos, manage theme parks, captain a cruise ship, open a restaurant, become a chef with your own TV show... the possibilities are endless.
The industry is also the largest employer of minority managers, and 56% of its managers are women. So this is an industry that offers opportunities for everyone. It is also genuinely global and is soon expected to become the largest industry on earth.
We have organized more information about the industry under six headings - or segments. Sound interesting... click and read on... |
